Microsoft has stopped distributing the November security updates for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019. They had side effects.
The updates for Microsoft Patchday published on Wednesday night of this week have undesirable side effects. Microsoft is therefore temporarily stopping distribution on Exchange Server 2016 and 2019.
In a tech community article, Microsoft initially explained the content and improvements of the updates for Microsoft Patch Day for Exchange. However, on Friday night, the manufacturer updated the article and now explains that the updates have been stopped for the time being. In particular, Microsoft has suspended distribution for the versions Exchange Server 2019 CU13 and CU14 as well as Exchange Server 2016 CU23.
Side effects: Transport rules are regularly cancelled.
"We are aware that customers are experiencing an issue with transport rules failing regularly after installing the update," Microsoft explains. "According to our initial investigations, this can occur if customers use their own transport or DLP rules." If this problem is encountered, the November update must be uninstalled until it is re-released (corrected), Microsoft's developers add.
"We are continuing our investigations and are working on a permanent fix for the issue. We will publish it when it is ready. We have also paused the rollout of the November 2024 service update on Windows and Microsoft Update," the Redmond company added. "Customers who do not use transport or DLP rules and have not encountered any problems with such rules can continue to use the November update."
It is to be hoped that Microsoft will quickly find a solution to the problem. After all, these are security updates that close vulnerabilities in the server software, which is inevitably publicly accessible. After all, Microsoft continues to write that it is not aware of any active exploits against the leaks plugged with the update.
On November Patch Day, Microsoft had already closed the security holes that had been attacked with updates. But the patches for Exchange servers were also classified as important by the developers.
