IT SMEs on the outcome of the EU elections: Europe needs a digital revolution

Aachen, 10 June 2024 – Dr. Oliver Grün, President of the German IT SME Association (BITMi) and the European DIGITAL SME Alliance, comments on the outcome of today's European elections as follows:

"After the election, it is important to set the course back towards growth and competitiveness. Europe must assert itself as a location for innovation and technology so that we can gradually reduce asymmetric dependence on the USA and China and secure market shares in important future technologies. Our European digital sector, which is dominated by medium-sized companies, can, wants and must make its contribution to this. After the regulatory burden for SMEs became an increasingly greater obstacle in the tech sector in the last legislative period, a phase of relief must now follow. In the new legislative period, there must therefore be a clear focus on improving innovation-friendly framework conditions for digitization 'made in Europe'. Specifically, we propose the implementation of a European Tech Deal, as already called for by several member states. Furthermore, compliance requirements, particularly in the areas of AI and cybersecurity, must be made more SME-friendly in order to stimulate innovation here."

BITMi, together with its European umbrella organization, the European DIGITAL SME Alliance, highlights further concrete adjustment options in the Manifesto 2030 – European Digital New Deal.

About the Federal Association of IT SMEs:

The Federal Association of IT SMEs (BITMi) represents over 2,500 companies in the digital economy and is thus the largest IT association for exclusively medium-sized interests in Germany
